The college's roots run deep, tracing back to the early 20th century. Established in 1966, Iowa Central was formed from the consolidation of three venerable area junior colleges located in Fort Dodge (1921), Webster City (1926), and Eagle Grove (1928). This groundbreaking merger was a direct result of Iowa's 61st General Assembly's Area School Act, uniting nine counties—Buena Vista, Calhoun, Greene, Hamilton, Humboldt, Pocahontas, Sac, Webster, and Wright—to create Merged Area V and offer accessible higher education for a wide region.

Iowa Central's commitment to expanding opportunities is evident in its continuous growth and innovative programs. In 1971, a fourth center was established in Storm Lake, initially focusing on secondary career education before quickly expanding to offer a full spectrum of community college programs. For students aspiring to a bachelor's degree, a unique cooperative venture with Buena Vista College, initiated in 1975, allows students to complete their first two years at Iowa Central and then seamlessly transition to earn a four-year degree through evening classes at the Fort Dodge Center, making higher education more attainable and flexible.
