Iowa Western Community College

Iowa Western Community College has a rich history of serving its community, established with a clear vision to provide accessible higher education. What began as an exciting announcement in December 1965 for a new four-year liberal arts college in North Council Bluffs quickly transformed into a vibrant community college, dedicated to fostering learning and opportunity across its region.

The institution officially commenced operations in 1966 under the temporary name, Area 13 Community College. Demonstrating an immediate commitment to widespread access, it simultaneously opened initial campuses in both Council Bluffs and Clarinda, laying the groundwork for its expansive reach and underscoring its mission to serve a broad student body from the outset.

By November 1966, the college solidified its identity, with the Area 13 Community College board officially adopting the name Iowa Western Community College. This pivotal moment marked its transition from an emergent institution to a recognized pillar of regional education.
