Since its founding in 1934, JU has evolved from a two-year college into a comprehensive university, earning accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The university's journey began as William J. Porter University, holding its first classes in a downtown church auditorium. By 1947, it had found its permanent home in Jacksonville's Arlington neighborhood, steadily growing its facilities and reputation. A pivotal moment occurred in 1958 when it merged with the Jacksonville College of Music, officially becoming Jacksonville University. The 1960s marked a period of significant expansion, culminating in the men's basketball team making a historic run to the NCAA Division I Championship in 1970.
