JMU's rich history began in 1908 as The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, opening its doors to 209 pioneering students in 1909. It transformed from a women's college, gaining authorization to award bachelor's degrees in 1916, and eventually becoming Madison College in 1938, honoring the fourth U.S. President, James Madison.

The university marked a significant turning point in 1946 when men were first admitted as regular day students, officially becoming a coeducational institution in 1966. Its academic offerings expanded with master's degrees authorized in 1954, solidifying its reputation as a comprehensive research university. Renamed James Madison University in 1977, the institution has experienced remarkable growth, particularly in the 21st century, expanding its campus and facilities to meet the needs of its diverse and growing student population.
