This elegant former governor's residence became the esteemed home of the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science, which officially opened its doors on September 25, 1946. John A. Gupton Jr. served as its President, with Bernadean guiding its educational vision as the Educational Director, embodying a pioneering spirit in specialized professional education.

From its very first class, which commenced on September 27, 1946, with an enrollment of 26 eager students, John A. Gupton College established a tradition of hands-on, intensive learning.
