The college's story began in March 1946 when visionaries John A. Gupton Jr. and his wife Bernadean acquired the historic Gov. Hill McAlister Mansion on West End Avenue. This stately landmark became the esteemed home of the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science, officially opening its doors on September 25, 1946. John A. Gupton Jr. served as its President, with Bernadean guiding its educational direction, setting the foundation for its unique identity.

The inaugural class welcomed 26 eager students on September 27, 1946, embarking on a focused nine-month curriculum designed to impart comprehensive knowledge and practical skills essential for the profession.
