Sanders, the first African-American president of a four-year institution in the South. A transformative period in the early 20th century saw the profound generosity of Jane Berry Smith, whose substantial donations in memory of her late husband, Johnson C. Smith, propelled the institution forward, leading to its renaming as The Johnson C. Smith University in 1923.
