Johnson University

Nestled in the heart of Tennessee, Johnson University stands as a testament to enduring faith, dedicated service, and academic evolution. It is known for its deep roots in theological education, having successfully transitioned from its origins as a Bible college to a comprehensive university, preparing students to make a meaningful impact in the world.

The institution's journey began in 1893 as "The School of the Evangelists," founded by the visionary Ashley S. Johnson. Born from a sermon in 1892, its early days were marked by a commitment to gospel education, quickly establishing a Main Building in 1895. Though an unfortunate fire razed the original structure in 1904, the community's resilience saw a new brick building dedicated in its place just a year later. A significant milestone occurred in 1909 when students petitioned to rename the institution Johnson Bible College in honor of its founder. The university also boasts a remarkable legacy of leadership, notably with Emma Elizabeth Johnson becoming one of the earliest women to lead a college in the United States after her husband's passing.

Throughout its history, Johnson University has been guided by a succession of dedicated presidents, each contributing to its growth and stability. From Alva Ross Brown, who became one of the youngest college presidents at 21, to Robert M. Bell who navigated financial challenges and expanded infrastructure, and David L. Eubanks who oversaw significant academic and physical expansion. The institution made a pivotal shift in 2011, officially becoming Johnson University, broadening its academic scope while maintaining its core mission. Current President Daniel Overdorf continues this legacy, fostering partnerships and overseeing continued development, including the Graham Center and Commons on its Florida campus.
