Joliet Junior College

Step into history at Joliet Junior College, the nation's very first public junior college, established in 1901. Born from a vision to make higher education accessible, JJC was founded by J. Stanley Brown, Superintendent of Joliet Township High School, and William Rainey Harper, President of the University of Chicago. From its humble beginnings with just six students holding classes at Joliet Township High School, JJC quickly established itself as a credible and vital educational resource. Its commitment to academic excellence was formally recognized early on, receiving accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1917, solidifying its place as a respected institution in the academic landscape.

Today, Joliet Junior College has grown far beyond its original classroom, moving to its expansive 1215 Houbolt Road campus in 1969, which became fully operational in 1974. Beyond its main campus, JJC extends its reach with additional sites in Romeoville, Morris, and Frankfort, Illinois, reflecting its dedication to serving a broad community. Students at JJC benefit from a rich history of innovation and a commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment, including traditions like its student newspaper, "The Blazer," first published in 1929.
