Founded initially in 1911 as the Jones County Agricultural High School, the institution quickly evolved. In 1922, a significant change allowed agricultural high schools in Mississippi to incorporate college-level courses. Seizing this opportunity, the school transformed into the Jones County Agricultural High School and Junior College, marking a pivotal moment in its history and in state education. Just five years later, in September 1927, the first cohort of 26 college students walked through its doors, setting the stage for decades of growth and academic achievement.

The college continued to mature, eventually separating its junior college operations from the agricultural high school in 1957, solidifying its identity as a distinct higher education entity. More recently, in 2018, while legally retaining its historic name, the college embraced an informal rebranding to "Jones College."
