Despite initial opposition regarding its unique academic model and campus plans, KGI found its footing, benefiting from a significant $50 million endowment from the W. M. Keck Foundation, after which it was named. This foundational support enabled KGI to swiftly develop its programs, awarding its first Master of Bioscience degree in 2002, marking a key milestone in its mission.

Under a succession of visionary leaders, including its first president Henry Riggs, followed by Sheldon Schuster, and now Mohamed Abousalem who assumed the presidency in 2024, KGI continues to evolve.
