Kentucky Mountain Bible College

Kentucky Mountain Bible College, originally founded as the Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute in 1931, emerged from a deep commitment to serving the Appalachian foothills of Eastern Kentucky. Established by Lela G. McConnell and Martha Archer, the college's foundational mission was to train young people "with the call of God upon them" for crucial work in ministry and missions. It began modestly with just two students in a remodeled commissary, quickly growing its faculty and student body as the need for dedicated spiritual leadership became evident.

From its inception, KMBC distinguished itself by offering a robust Bible-centered education. Starting with a two-year program, it soon expanded in 1938 to a comprehensive three-year curriculum that blended rigorous academic study with practical application. Students immersed themselves in a rich course load covering theology, psychology, ethics, and church history, alongside vital communication skills in English, speech, and Greek. The curriculum also embraced the arts, including homiletics and both instrumental and vocal music, preparing well-rounded individuals for diverse roles in Christian service.

The college's early years were marked by extraordinary resilience in the face of devastating natural disasters. In 1939, KMBC endured not one, but two severe floods. The first, in February, caused significant damage and isolated the campus by washing away bridges. Just months later, in July, a catastrophic flash flood completely destroyed the original campus buildings, claiming the lives of several students and faculty members. This tragic event, which also devastated the surrounding community, showcased the profound commitment of the college's founders and its students, who despite immense loss, were dedicated to rebuilding and continuing their vital mission. KMBC stands as a testament to an enduring spirit, dedicated to its foundational calling.
