Kentucky Mountain Bible College

Kentucky Mountain Bible College, established in 1931, stands as a testament to unwavering faith and dedication, born from a vision to train young people for ministry and missions in the rugged Appalachian foothills of Eastern Kentucky. Founded by Lela G. McConnell and Martha Archer, the institution initially offered a focused two-year Bible course, quickly growing from just two students to a vibrant learning community committed to spiritual and practical development. It was an offshoot of Mount Carmel High School, established to meet a unique call for further training in missionary work.

The college's early history is marked by extraordinary resilience. After its initial founding on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Pelfrey, the school quickly established itself, expanding its curriculum in 1938 to a comprehensive three-year program. This advanced curriculum included a robust blend of theology, psychology, ethics, church history, English, Greek, homiletics, and both instrumental and vocal music, preparing students not just spiritually but also academically and practically for their calling.

However, 1939 tested the college's resolve with two devastating floods. The first, in February, caused significant damage and cut off access. Just months later, in July, a catastrophic flash flood completely destroyed the original campus, claiming the lives of several students and faculty. Yet, from the ashes of adversity, the spirit of Kentucky Mountain Bible College endured, demonstrating a profound commitment to its mission and the community it serves. This remarkable history underscores the foundational strength and enduring purpose that continues to define the institution today.
