Kentucky Mountain Bible College

Kentucky Mountain Bible College, established in 1931 by Lela G. McConnell and Martha Archer, was founded with a profound mission: to train young individuals from the Appalachian foothills of Eastern Kentucky for ministry and missionary work. Born as an offshoot of Mount Carmel High School, it quickly became a vital institution for those with a divine calling, providing advanced training beyond high school and fostering a deep commitment to spiritual service.

Initially opening in October 1931 as the Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute with just two students, KMBI rapidly grew its faculty and student body. It began with a two-year Bible course, expanding to a robust three-year program by 1938. The curriculum was comprehensive, encompassing theology, psychology, ethics, church history, English, speech, Greek, homiletics, instrumental music, and vocal music, all designed to equip students practically and spiritually for their future roles in missions and ministry.

The college's early years were marked by incredible resilience in the face of natural disaster. In February 1939, severe flooding impacted the campus, followed by a devastating flash flood on July 5, 1939, which completely destroyed the original school, claiming the lives of several students and faculty members. Despite this immense tragedy, the story of Kentucky Mountain Bible College is one of unwavering dedication to its mission, demonstrating a spirit of perseverance that continues to define its legacy.
