Since its inception, Kirkwood has grown to become a cornerstone of education in Iowa, known for its dynamic and inclusive environment. The college's rich history began in 1966, opening as Area Ten Community College with a modest enrollment of 199 students. Its name officially changed in 1969, honoring Samuel J. Kirkwood, a significant figure in Iowa's history as an early abolitionist and the state's American Civil War Governor. This legacy of progressive leadership continued with the historic appointment of Dr. Lori Sundberg in 2018, who became the college's fifth president and the first woman to hold this esteemed position, marking a new chapter in Kirkwood's proud story.

Today, Kirkwood offers a compelling student experience characterized by its significant size and remarkable diversity. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the college served 16,781 students, fostering a strong sense of community within an average class size of just 21, ensuring personalized attention. Its global reach is evident with 330 international students representing 100 different countries, enriching the campus with a multitude of perspectives and cultures.
