The university's roots stretch back to September 15, 1866, when it was established as the Keystone State Normal School. Born from the demands of a rapidly industrializing region, its initial mission was to train skilled teachers. As societal needs evolved, so did Kutztown. In 1928, it transitioned into Kutztown State Teacher's College, gaining authorization to confer bachelor's degrees.
