The college's journey began humbly as a high-school level women's academy, quickly growing in stature. By 1847, it was recognized as the 'LaGrange Female Institute,' gaining the crucial power to confer degrees. A few years later, in 1851, the institution moved to its scenic 'Hill' location, adopting a robust four-year curriculum and changing its name to 'LaGrange Female College.' This period marked a significant stride in its commitment to higher education for women, eventually coming under the ownership of the Methodist Church in 1856.

The 20th century brought transformative changes, culminating in its renaming to 'LaGrange College' in 1934 and a landmark decision in 1953 to officially become coeducational. This opened its doors to a diverse student body, further enriching its academic and social fabric. The campus itself saw remarkable growth in 1992, thanks to the generous support of the Callaway Foundation, which gifted substantial land and facilities, including state-of-the-art auditoriums, educational buildings, and athletic complexes like tennis courts, softball fields, and the Hudson Natatorium.
