LaGrange College

LaGrange College stands as a testament to educational evolution, boasting a captivating history that transformed it from a pioneering women's academy into a vibrant coeducational institution. Situated on "the Hill," the highest geographical point in the city of LaGrange, this institution offers a unique blend of heritage and modern academic opportunity. Its enduring connection with the United Methodist Church, maintained through the North Georgia Conference, underpins a commitment to values-based education.

Beginning its journey as a high-school level women's academy, the institution quickly evolved. In 1847, it was renamed "LaGrange Female Institute" and received a charter allowing it to confer degrees, a significant step for women's education at the time. By 1851, it moved to its present scenic location and adopted a four-year curriculum, changing its name to "LaGrange Female College." This period marked a foundational era, solidifying its academic structure and deepening its ties with the Methodist Church.

The college continued to break new ground, officially becoming "LaGrange College" in 1934 as discussions about admitting men progressed. A pivotal moment arrived in 1953 when the Board of Trustees officially made it coeducational, opening its doors to all students. Further demonstrating its growth and commitment to student life, the campus famously doubled in size in 1992, thanks to a generous donation from the Callaway Foundation, which provided modern facilities including an auditorium, education building, and extensive athletic fields, enriching the student experience for generations to come.
