Lake-Sumter State College

Lake-Sumter State College, founded in 1962, is a public institution dedicated to empowering its 6,042 students. What truly sets Lake-Sumter State College apart is the incredible historical depth of its primary campus site. Long before its establishment, the land near Silver Lake served as a significant Pre-Columbian site for indigenous Floridians, including the Timucuan and Seminole peoples. In later centuries, the area thrived with turpentine mills, farming, citrus groves, and welcomed winter tourists. A pivotal chapter in its history unfolded in 1942 when the United States Army established an army air base right where today's campus buildings stand. This base briefly hosted the 313th Tactical Fighter Squadron and later, from 1943, housed 250 German Prisoners of War, boasting one of the lowest escape rates in the nation. This unique past imbues the campus with a profound sense of resilience and history.
