LIT boasts a rich and transformative history, evolving from its origins as a vocational division within Lamar College, which was chartered in 1949. Over the decades, it steadily expanded its offerings, becoming the Lamar School of Vocations in 1955 and later the College of Technical Arts within Lamar University in 1972. A pivotal moment arrived in 1995 when, upon Lamar University's absorption into the Texas State University System, the Institute of Technology proudly became an independent institution, solidifying its unique mission. It was officially renamed Lamar Institute of Technology by the Texas Legislature in 1999.
