The institute's rich history began with the chartering of Lamar College in 1949, where it first emerged as the Division of Vocations. Championed by State Representative Jack Brooks and Senator W.R. Cousins, Jr., this foundational step laid the groundwork for what would become an independent educational powerhouse. Over the decades, it evolved, first as the Lamar School of Vocations in 1955, and then as the College of Technical Arts within Lamar University by 1972, where it expanded its offerings and began awarding associate's degrees in 1971.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1995 when, as Lamar University became part of the Texas State University System, the Lamar University Institute of Technology achieved its independence. This milestone solidified its distinct identity and mission. Four years later, in 1999, the Texas Legislature officially renamed it the Lamar Institute of Technology, cementing its status as a dedicated institution focused on technical and vocational excellence.
