Lamar State College-Orange

Lamar State College-Orange (LSC-O) is a vibrant and rapidly growing public community college, deeply committed to providing accessible education and robust workforce development. Known for its remarkable resilience in overcoming multiple natural disasters and its significant expansion in recent years, LSC-O offers a supportive and dynamic environment. Students here can pursue both essential academic transfer programs for seamless university transitions and highly effective career-focused vocational training, equipping them with the practical skills and knowledge needed for immediate entry into the workforce.

Established in 1969 as an extension center of Lamar University, LSC-O quickly forged its own path, gaining independence and becoming a distinct component within the Lamar University System by 1983. Pioneering leaders, such as Joe Ben Welch, recognized the critical need for a dual focus – offering both academic courses that transfer and vital career-oriented programs like vocational nursing and welding. This foundational commitment to practical skills and accessible higher education pathways has been a cornerstone of the college's development, leading to independent accreditation in 1989 and degree-granting authority in 1991.

Under successive presidencies, LSC-O has experienced impressive growth and modernization, including the construction of the Ron E. Lewis Library in 2001 and a new nursing and classroom building in 2013. The college's innovative spirit is evident in unique offerings like its U.S. Coast Guard-certified Maritime program and the recent expansion with its first satellite campus in Lumberton in 2023. Despite facing significant challenges from hurricanes, LSC-O consistently adapted, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and quickly resuming classes. With current enrollment exceeding 3,600 students and an ambitious masterplan including new academic and student success centers, LSC-O continues to foster a dynamic and forward-looking student experience, focused on opportunity and community engagement.
