The college's journey began in December 1964, chartered as the Gainesville-Hall County Area Vocational Trade School. It quickly adapted, changing its name to Lanier Area Vocational-Technical School just ten months later. The early days saw classes held in various community spaces before settling into its first dedicated building in Oakwood in 1967. This humble beginning laid the groundwork for a dynamic institution committed to serving its community.

Over the decades, Lanier Technical College has expanded significantly, growing into a multi-campus institution that truly embodies accessibility. Beyond its main Hall campus in Gainesville, it boasts additional locations in Cumming (Forsyth Campus, opened 1998), Winder (opened 2002), Commerce (opened 2003), and Dawsonville (opened 2005). Furthermore, it extends its educational reach through GED and ESL classes offered at various sites across its expansive seven-county service area, ensuring that a broad spectrum of learners can access vital educational opportunities.
