Lawson State Community College

Lawson State Community College stands as a cornerstone of education in Alabama, a public historically black community college with a rich legacy of empowering students. Since its inception, Lawson State has been dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality technical and academic instruction, fostering growth, and preparing its diverse student body for successful careers and further educational pursuits. Led by President Dr. Cynthia T. Anthony, the college continues its mission of community upliftment and student success.

The story of Lawson State is deeply intertwined with the history of educational opportunity for Black students in Alabama. Its roots trace back to 1949 with the founding of the Wenonah State Technical Institute, established to offer vital trade courses. This technical focus was complemented in 1965 by the creation of Wenonah State Junior College, providing academic pathways. These two institutions, both designed to serve Black students, merged in 1973 to form T. A. Lawson State Community College, honoring its first president, Dr. Theodore Alfred Lawson, who spearheaded its foundational growth.

The college further expanded its reach and offerings in 2005, merging with Bessemer State Technical College. This strategic move created the Bessemer Campus, significantly broadening the college's programs and geographical footprint, ensuring even more students could access its valuable resources. Today, with its Birmingham and Bessemer campuses, Lawson State remains committed to its founding principles, offering a supportive and dynamic learning environment where students can acquire the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an evolving workforce and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
