Lawson State Community College

Established with a pioneering spirit, Lawson State's roots trace back to 1949 when its technical division, originally Wenonah State Technical Institute, was founded to offer essential trade courses specifically for Black students. This mission was further expanded in 1965 with the creation of Wenonah State Junior College, providing academic pathways for the same community. The visionary leadership of Dr. Theodore Alfred Lawson shaped its early years, with the junior college eventually being renamed in his honor.

Today, Lawson State Community College operates across two dynamic campuses – its original Birmingham location and the Bessemer Campus, established through a strategic merger in 2005. Under the leadership of President Dr. Cynthia T.
