The college's story is rooted in a crucial mission: to provide educational access. It began in 1949 as the Wenonah State Technical Institute, specifically designed to offer invaluable trade courses to Black students at a time when such opportunities were scarce. This commitment expanded in 1965 with the establishment of Wenonah State Junior College, broadening academic horizons for the same community. The visionary leadership of Dr. Theodore Alfred Lawson, the first director and president, shaped its early years, and his enduring legacy is honored in the college's very name.

Lawson State truly came into its own on October 1, 1973, when the technical and junior college divisions formally merged to create T. A. Lawson State Community College, forming a comprehensive educational powerhouse at its Birmingham Campus. Its dedication to expanding opportunity continued into the new millennium with a significant merger in June 2005, when Bessemer State Technical College joined the LSCC family. This strategic move not only added a vital second campus in Bessemer but also solidified Lawson State's position as a regional leader in accessible, high-quality education, continuously adapting to meet the evolving needs of its diverse student body.
