About Lindsey Hopkins Technical College
From historic hotel to modern training hub: Lindsey Hopkins shapes careers with hands-on skills.
Lindsey Hopkins Technical College stands out as a public institution deeply committed to practical, hands-on career training. Its origins are as unique as they are inspiring, rooted in a significant act of philanthropy that transformed a piece of Miami's history into a cornerstone of vocational education. Today, the college continues this legacy, empowering students with the skills needed for successful careers in a variety of technical fields.
The college's foundation traces back to the 1920s with the unfinished Roosevelt Hotel. In 1936, Lindsey Hopkins Sr. and Jr. acquired the derelict structure for a modest sum. Following his father's passing, Lindsey Hopkins Jr. made an extraordinary gesture: he sold the beautifully renovated hotel, then valued at over $1 million, to the Miami-Dade Public School district for a fraction of its worth. This remarkable gift established the Lindsey Hopkins Vocational School, an enduring memorial to his father and a testament to community spirit.
Evolving with the times, Lindsey Hopkins Technical College moved to its current state-of-the-art facilities at 750 NW 20th Street in 1983. This strategic relocation allowed for significant expansion of its diverse programs and the enhancement of its training capabilities, moving beyond the historic hotel structure which was eventually demolished in 1988. The modern campus, featuring specialized labs and workshops, is ideally situated near the bustling Miami Health District, providing students with exceptional opportunities for practical learning and future employment connections.
