About Livingstone College

Livingstone College: A historic HBCU empowering future leaders with a legacy of commitment and innovation.

Nestled in Salisbury, North Carolina, Livingstone College stands as a beacon of education with a profound legacy. As a private historically black Christian college, it is deeply rooted in its affiliation with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Its inspiring motto, "A Call To Commitment. Taking Livingstone College to the next level," encapsulates its enduring mission to foster growth, excellence, and dedicated service in its community and beyond.

The college's rich history began in 1879 as Zion Wesley Institute in Concord, North Carolina. After a period of dedicated fundraising, it proudly reopened its doors in Salisbury in 1882. In a significant move in 1887, the institution was renamed Livingstone College, honoring the revered African missionary David Livingstone. That same year marked a pivotal moment in educational history when Livingstone College granted its first degrees, notably to the first Black women to earn bachelor's degrees in North Carolina, solidifying its place as a pioneer in higher education.

Today, Livingstone College continues its tradition of academic excellence, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's degrees. A standout offering is its accredited School of Hospitality Management & Culinary Arts, which provides hands-on, career-focused education. The college cultivates a vibrant student experience for its 839 students within its small town campus, spanning 272 acres. As the proud home of the Blue Bears, Livingstone College fosters a supportive and engaging environment where students are prepared to thrive both academically and professionally.
