About Long Island University

Empowering futures with a global outlook and a rich history of accessible education.

Long Island University (LIU) stands as a dynamic private institution dedicated to providing effective and moderately priced education to students from all walks of life. Chartered in 1926 in Brooklyn, the university quickly established itself as a cornerstone of learning in New York, and today serves a vibrant community of over 16,300 students across its diverse campuses. Guided by its Latin motto, "Urbi et Orbi," LIU is committed to making a difference both locally and globally.

LIU's history is marked by significant expansion and innovation. Its original Brooklyn campus, located in Downtown Brooklyn, retains much of its historic charm, including elements of the 1920s Paramount Theatre. This campus is home to the university's oldest school, the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, founded in 1891. Further enhancing its global reach, LIU Brooklyn also hosts LIU Global, a unique four-year bachelor's degree program that allows students to live and study internationally in eight countries. In response to growing suburban populations, LIU expanded in 1951, acquiring the vast 177-acre Hillwood estate on Long Island’s Gold Coast, which later became LIU Post. Today, the LIU Post campus spans 307 acres, featuring historic mansions, gardens, and the only on-campus equestrian facility on Long Island.

Academically, LIU continually adapts to the needs of modern students, introducing its first online degree plan in 2004. The university is also home to the NCAA Division I LIU Sharks, showcasing excellence in athletics. Beyond the classroom and sports fields, LIU contributes significantly to the cultural and intellectual landscape, sponsoring the esteemed George Polk Awards for excellence in journalism and managing the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts. With a strong leadership, including its first woman president, Kimberly R. Cline, LIU fosters an engaging and supportive environment for all its students, preparing them for success in a rapidly changing world.
