Los Medanos College

Los Medanos College, a vibrant public community college founded in 1974, serves as a cornerstone of education in Eastern Contra Costa County, California. As an integral part of the esteemed Contra Costa Community College District, LMC is committed to providing accessible and quality learning opportunities for its diverse student body, fostering both academic excellence and community engagement.

The college's unique name carries a rich historical legacy, stemming from a misspelling of the former Rancho Los Méganos. This expansive Mexican land grant, meaning "inland sand dunes" in Spanish, was bestowed upon José Noriega by Governor José Castro in 1835. The rancho encompassed a vast area extending eastward from present-day Antioch, along the San Joaquin River to the Old River, aptly describing the region's geographical features along the Sacramento River and in the foothills of Mt. Diablo.

With a student population of 6,845 as of spring 2023, Los Medanos College offers a supportive environment where students can pursue their educational and career aspirations. Under the leadership of President Pamela Ralston, the college continues its mission to empower students, offering a pathway to higher education and skill development within a close-knit community college setting, preparing them for success in their chosen fields or for transfer to four-year institutions.
