The university's rich history began in 1959 when the Louisiana Legislature authorized its establishment as a two-year college. By 1960, LSUA welcomed its first students, quickly expanding its offerings with an Associate in Nursing program in 1964, followed by robust academic divisions in Liberal Arts, Business Administration, and Sciences by 1967. A significant milestone arrived in 1974 with accreditation by SACS to award associate degrees. The campus also holds a unique historical connection, housing the Edwin Epps House, a plantation home moved to campus in 1999, which has ties to Solomon Northup, author of "Twelve Years a Slave."

LSUA truly transformed in 2001 when legislative approval paved the way for it to offer baccalaureate degrees, culminating in SACS accreditation for both associate and bachelor's degrees by 2002. This pivotal shift saw the university reorganize into colleges and departments, delivering its first bachelor's degree graduates in December 2003 across fields like biology, general studies, elementary education, and liberal studies. Today, LSUA continues to expand its academic portfolio with programs in psychology, mathematics, elder care, and medical laboratory science, alongside offering alternative certification for educators. In 2014, LSUA underwent a significant rebranding, officially becoming "LSU of Alexandria" as part of the unifying "One LSU" initiative, strengthening its ties to the broader LSU system while maintaining its distinct identity and mission.
