Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) stands as a testament to perseverance and community spirit, evolving from a local vision into a vibrant, comprehensive university that profoundly impacts North Louisiana. What began as a bold aspiration in the 1930s to bring higher education to Shreveport has blossomed into an institution renowned for its commitment to student success and regional development. The journey to establish LSUS was a lengthy and passionate endeavor, spearheaded by local leaders like Frank Fulco and civic organizations. After decades of proposals and studies affirming the community's need and desire for a state college, LSUS officially opened its doors in September 1967 as a two-year commuter college, welcoming its inaugural class of 807 students. This initial step, driven by unwavering local support, laid the groundwork for the institution it would become.

However, the vision for LSUS quickly expanded. Following its opening, a concerted push for four-year degree-granting status gained momentum, championed by students and local politicians despite significant opposition from other regional colleges. This determination paid off when, in June 1972, Governor Edwin Edwards signed the pivotal bill into law. Soon after, LSUS dramatically expanded its offerings, instituting third and senior academic years and proudly celebrating its first commencement in 1975, a pivotal moment that realized a forty-year dream for the Shreveport community.

Today, LSUS continues its remarkable growth, having elevated its academic standing significantly. In 1978, it ventured into graduate studies with the Master of Education, followed by the Master of Business Administration a year later. This commitment to advanced learning culminated in 2013 with the approval of its Doctor of Education (EdD) program, solidifying its status as a comprehensive institution. Accreditated as a Level V institution by SACSCOC in 2014, LSUS offers a robust portfolio of graduate programs, ensuring students have access to exceptional educational opportunities right in their own community.
