Lourdes University

Nestled in Northwest Ohio, Lourdes University stands as a private institution with a unique and impactful history rooted in the Franciscan tradition. Initially conceived as an extension campus, it quickly grew into a foundational pillar for its community, dedicated to providing a liberal arts education.

Founded in 1958 as Lourdes Junior College, the institution's primary mission was to educate the Sisters of St. Francis, a community established by Mother Adelaide Sandusky in 1916. For decades, it fostered an environment of learning and spiritual growth, building on the profound legacy of the Sylvania Franciscans. This commitment to education and service laid the groundwork for its future evolution.

The university's history reflects a gradual broadening of its embrace, moving beyond its initial scope. In 1964, it earned accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, solidifying its academic standing. As the needs of the community shifted, Lourdes opened its doors to lay students, welcoming women in 1969 and men in 1975, transforming into a co-educational institution that served a wider population with its liberal arts curriculum. At its peak, it catered to 1221 students, offering a distinctive educational experience.

However, Lourdes University also recently made a significant announcement. On February 11, 2026, the university stated its intention to close at the conclusion of that academic year, marking the end of an era for this historically significant institution.
