Lourdes University

Nestled in Northwest Ohio, Lourdes University began its journey in 1958 as Lourdes Junior College, a private institution deeply rooted in the Franciscan tradition. Initially established to educate the Sisters of St. Francis, its foundation was a vision brought to life by Mother Adelaide Sandusky, who cultivated the Sylvania Franciscan community and its ministries.

Over the decades, Lourdes University embarked on a path of growth and inclusivity. After receiving accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in 1964, the university gradually opened its doors to a broader student body. Lay women were welcomed starting in 1969, followed by men in 1975, transforming the institution into a diverse learning environment. This evolution reflects a commitment to extending its liberal arts education and Franciscan values to a wider community of learners, growing to serve 1221 students under the leadership of President William J. Bisset.

However, it's important for prospective students and families to be aware of a significant development in the university's history. On February 11, 2026, Lourdes University announced its plan to close at the conclusion of the academic year. This decision marks the end of an era for an institution that has profoundly impacted countless lives through its unique blend of academic rigor and Franciscan heritage.
