Luna Community College

Luna Community College stands as a vital public institution in New Mexico, committed to providing accessible and quality education to its community. Founded in 1969, it originally emerged as the Luna Area Vocational Technical School, reflecting a foundational dedication to practical, skills-based learning that continues to shape its offerings today. Under the leadership of President Edward Martinez, the college remains a cornerstone for students seeking to build strong academic and career foundations.

The college's rich history began with a legislative act in 1967, brought to fruition by State Senator Ray Leger. It was proudly named in honor of Captain Maximiliano Luna, a distinguished figure who served as Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives and a member of the legendary Rough Riders. This unique heritage, combining legislative foresight with a tribute to a local hero, underscores the college's deep roots within the cultural and political fabric of New Mexico. The institution evolved, officially changing its name to Luna Community College in 2000 to better reflect its comprehensive community college mission.

Luna Community College has also demonstrated remarkable resilience and an unwavering commitment to its students. Following governance and financial challenges that led to scrutiny by the Higher Learning Commission in 2017 and an extended probation in 2019, the college diligently addressed concerns and successfully navigated these hurdles. By November 2020, the Commission reevaluated LCC and removed its probationary status, affirming the college's dedication to meeting high standards of accreditation and ensuring a stable, quality learning environment for all its students.
