The college's journey began in 1969, emerging from a 1967 authorization by the New Mexico Legislature. Originally known as the Luna Area Vocational Technical School, it was thoughtfully named after Captain Maximiliano Luna, a distinguished New Mexico House of Representatives Speaker and a member of the Rough Riders. This unique heritage speaks to a deep connection with local history and a commitment to practical, impactful education. The institution evolved, officially becoming Luna Community College in 2000, broadening its scope while retaining its core mission.
