Established in 1962 by visionary Robert Gee Witty in Jacksonville, Florida, the college was named in honor of Luther Rice, a renowned educator, missionary, and clergyman of the early 1800s whose legacy of service and learning continues to inspire. The State of Florida officially chartered the school that same year, setting the stage for decades of growth. A pivotal moment in its history occurred in August 1991 when the college strategically relocated from Florida to its current, accessible campus in Metro Atlanta, Georgia, enhancing its reach and opportunities for students.

Throughout its history, Luther Rice has been guided by a succession of dedicated leaders, including its founder Robert Gee Witty, who served as President and later Chancellor, and James Flanagan. Today, the institution thrives under the leadership of its fifth President, Steven Steinhilber, who himself is an alumnus, holding an M.Div. from Luther Rice and a Doctor of Ministry degree.
