The institution's charter was officially signed by Governor Ozra Amander Hadley on October 24, 1872, marking the official birth of this enduring educational beacon. Morrow Hall became its first permanent building, occupied just a year later in 1873, cementing its early establishment and commitment to growth.

For decades, the Long family guided the college's development until Dr. Paul M. McCain assumed the presidency in 1952, ushering in a new era of leadership. A pivotal moment arrived in 1994 when the college was proudly renamed Lyon College, honoring the profound contributions of the Lyon family of Arkansas. Frank Lyon Sr. served on the board for over 40 years, and his son, Frank Lyon Jr., also dedicated more than three decades, chairing the board for four years. Their enduring commitment was highlighted by Frank Lyon Jr. and Jane Lyon's record-setting $10 million gift, underscoring their dedication to the college's future and its mission.
