Lyon College

Lyon College proudly holds the distinction of being Arkansas's oldest independent college, a testament to its enduring legacy in higher education. The college's journey began with the vision of Isaac J. Long and fellow Presbyterians, who, despite Batesville losing a bid for a state college, established Arkansas College. Chartered by Governor Ozra Amander Hadley in October 1872, the institution quickly laid down roots, with Morrow Hall becoming its first permanent building in 1873. For decades, the Long family stewarded the college, guiding its early development and setting a foundation for the robust educational institution it would become.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1994 when the college was renamed Lyon College, honoring the profound contributions of the philanthropic Lyon family of Arkansas. Frank Lyon Sr.'s extensive service on the board of trustees and the historic $10 million gift from Frank Lyon Jr. and Jane Lyon underscore the family's deep commitment to the college's mission. This generous support has empowered Lyon College to enhance its offerings and uphold its high standards of education.

Today, under the leadership of President Melissa Taverner, who assumed the role in 2021, Lyon College continues to thrive.
