Initially a diploma-granting institution, it embraced higher academic standards in 1977, transitioning to offer a two-year nursing degree and earning vital accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. This pivotal moment marked its shift towards becoming a fully recognized academic institution, then known as the Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing.

Over the years, the institution has adapted its name to reflect its expanding scope, becoming the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions in 2007, and ultimately the Maine College of Health Professions in 2014. Today, led by President Dr. Monika Bissell, MCHP continues its tradition of excellence.
