Established in 1891 as The Central Maine General Hospital Training School, MCHP has a long and storied history of adapting and growing to serve its community. What began as a diploma-granting institution for nursing evolved significantly. In 1977, it began offering a two-year nursing degree under the new name, Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing, and notably earned accreditation from the prestigious New England Association of Schools and Colleges. This pivotal moment cemented its status as a recognized degree-granting college.

Continuing its evolution, the institution was renamed the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions in 2007, before finally adopting its current identity as the Maine College of Health Professions in 2014.
