Maine Media College, now known simply as Maine Media, is a unique institution nestled in picturesque Rockport, a place where aspiring visual storytellers come to hone their craft. From its roots as a hub for photographers, it has blossomed into a comprehensive college offering intensive workshops and degree programs in various media arts. The college's journey began in 1973 as the Maine Photographic Workshops, founded by photographer David Lyman. Lyman intentionally chose Rockport, a quiet coastal town, to create an ideal setting for intense artistic exploration. This humble beginning laid the groundwork for an institution dedicated to practical, skill-based education in visual media, initially known as Rockport College. Its evolution from a workshop model to a degree-granting institution highlights its commitment to formal artistic education while maintaining its workshop heritage.

Maine Media College is renowned for its academic rigor in visual arts, offering both an Associate of Arts and the prestigious Master of Fine Arts degree, the latter introduced in 1995. A significant turning point occurred in 2006 when founder David Lyman put the organization up for sale, leading to its successful acquisition by a dedicated group of faculty and staff. In 2007, it transitioned into a non-profit entity, solidifying its mission-driven approach to education and ensuring its legacy of fostering talent in photography, filmmaking, and related media arts. Today, it continues to adapt, most recently simplifying its name to Maine Media in 2023, reflecting its expansive reach in the contemporary media landscape.
