MATC's journey began in 1965 as the Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School, established under the Kansas Board of Education. What started with classes on the Manhattan High School campus quickly grew, moving to its dedicated 3136 Dickens Ave campus by 1967. Over the decades, the institution evolved significantly, first rebranding as Manhattan Area Technical Center in 1992 and ultimately earning its current designation as Manhattan Area Technical College in 1996, a testament to its expanding scope and recognition. This transformation was cemented when Kansas Governor Bill Graves signed House Bill 2606, solidifying its status as a leading technical college.

A pivotal moment in MATC's history occurred in 2004 when it separated from USD 383 to become an independent public institution, further enhancing its autonomy and focus. This independence was swiftly followed by a significant achievement in 2007: earning accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission, assuring students and families of the quality and integrity of its programs. Under the leadership of President James Genandt, MATC continues its mission to provide accessible, career-focused education, fostering a student experience geared towards practical mastery and professional success.
