About Martin University

Martin University: Indiana's unique predominantly Black institution with a mission of harmony.

Martin University emerged as a beacon of education and social justice in Indiana, distinguished as the state's only predominantly Black institution (PBI). Founded in 1977 as Martin Center College, its very name honored two titans: civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Martin de Porres, a patron saint embodying racial harmony. This unique naming reflected its profound mission to foster understanding and unity, growing from a nonprofit human services agency committed to community upliftment.

The university's journey saw it grow from an independent entity to a vital educational hub. After starting at 35th Street and College Avenue, it established its permanent home in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood in 1987. The campus thoughtfully expanded around its initial setting in a former church and school, culminating in the opening of an impressive $10-million Educational Center and adjoining Peace Garden in 2001. These facilities enriched the student experience, offering nine modern classrooms, faculty and staff offices, an expansive 800-seat Gathertorium, a striking two-story glass-and-steel globe, the dedicated Frederick Douglass Room, and comfortable student and staff lounges.

Though not designated as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) due to its founding date post-1964, Martin University held a singular and invaluable place in higher education. It offered a distinctive environment for its diverse student body, which numbered 223 at one point, fostering academic growth within a community deeply committed to its founding principles of equity and racial harmony. While Martin University suspended operations at the end of December 2025 due to financial and enrollment challenges, its legacy as a pioneering institution dedicated to educational access and community empowerment remains significant.
