McKendree University

Established by pioneer Methodists, McKendree has maintained its ties to the United Methodist Church while evolving into a dynamic institution committed to student growth. Founded in 1828 as "Lebanon Seminary" with just 72 students, the institution quickly grew, adopting the name McKendree College in 1830 in honor of Bishop William McKendree. It secured one of the first charters granted to independent church colleges by the Illinois legislature in 1835, laying a foundational stone for higher education in the state. This pioneering spirit continues to shape its educational approach.

The university has experienced significant expansion, particularly since 1994, with a notable increase in enrollment. This growth is complemented by substantial investments in its campus, including a capital campaign that raised over $20 million for facilities like the state-of-the-art Russel E. and Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, known as The Hett. In 2004, McKendree broadened its academic offerings by introducing its first graduate programs, providing advanced opportunities alongside its strong undergraduate curriculum, ensuring a comprehensive and enriching student experience.
