Memphis Theological Seminary

Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS) stands as a venerable private seminary, tracing its origins back to 1852. Initially known as the Cumberland Presbyterian Theological School, MTS has a rich legacy of preparing individuals for dedicated service within the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition, and continues to foster a community of learning and spiritual growth.

Its history is marked by a journey across Tennessee, beginning in McLemoresville, then relocating to the campus of Bethel College in McKenzie. A pivotal moment arrived in 1964 when the institution made its final move to Memphis, finding a distinguished home in the historic Newburger House. This grand residence, originally constructed in 1912 for Judge Joseph Newburger and designed by the prominent architectural firm Hanker and Cairns, provides a unique and inspiring setting for theological study.
