About Meridian Community College

Mississippi's only community college born from local school initiative.

Meridian Community College (MCC), established in 1937, stands as a vibrant public institution serving 3,435 students under the leadership of President Tom Huebner. It is a cornerstone of education in its region, dedicated to providing diverse opportunities and fostering a comprehensive learning experience for its community members.

MCC boasts a truly distinctive history, originating as the "13th" and "14th" grades at Meridian High School. It holds the unique distinction of being the only one of Mississippi's 15 public community colleges to emerge from the initiative of a local school system, a testament to the pioneering vision of Dr. H.M. Ivy in the 1930s. The college evolved from its initial home, moving to its current expansive campus in 1964, and further solidified its community commitment through a significant merger in 1970 with the historically black T.J. Harris Junior College, integrating over 400 students into the campus.

Embracing its growth and expanded mission, Meridian Junior College achieved full autonomy in 1980, forming its own independent district and board of trustees, thereby separating from Meridian Public Schools. This independence paved the way for its rebranding as Meridian Community College during its 50th-anniversary celebration in 1987. This name change was a conscious effort to accurately reflect the rich diversity of educational and vocational opportunities it provides for the growing Meridian area, a legacy of innovation and community service that continues to empower students today.
