Merrimack College

Merrimack College, a dynamic private university, stands as a testament to purpose-driven education rooted in Augustinian values. Established in 1947 by the venerable Order of Saint Augustine, it holds the distinct honor of being the second Augustinian affiliated college in the United States, following Villanova University. Its founding was a direct response to a pivotal moment in American history, born from the vision of Archbishop Richard Cushing of Boston, who sought to provide a liberal arts education for the veterans returning from World War II.

The charge to bring this vision to life was given to the esteemed Rev. Vincent McQuade, O.S.A., a native of Lawrence, Massachusetts, and a trusted friend of Archbishop Cushing. Drawing on his experience working with transitioning veterans at Villanova, Father McQuade meticulously orchestrated every aspect of Merrimack's creation, from securing land and zoning to establishing the curriculum and overseeing campus construction. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts officially chartered "The Augustinian College of the Merrimack Valley" in March 1947, and by September of the same year, Merrimack College opened its doors, ready to welcome its first cohort of students.

While initially conceived with a commuter school format in mind, Merrimack College has evolved into a thriving institution serving a diverse student body of 5,862. Under the current leadership of President Christopher E. Hopey, who took the helm in 2010, the college continues its mission to provide a robust private university experience.
