Merrimack College

Established in 1947 by the esteemed Order of Saint Augustine, it holds the distinction of being the second Augustinian-affiliated college in the United States, following Villanova University. The college's founding was a direct response to a significant societal need after World War II. Archbishop Richard Cushing envisioned a liberal arts college, initially designed in a commuter school format, to serve the returning veterans. This crucial mission was entrusted to the Rev. Vincent McQuade, O.S.A., who meticulously orchestrated the college's creation, from securing its charter in March 1947 to its official opening in September of the same year. This foundational commitment to service and accessibility continues to shape Merrimack's ethos today.
