Metropolitan State University

Metropolitan State University, established in 1971, stands as a beacon for non-traditional learners in the bustling Twin Cities metropolitan area. Founded with the motto "Where life and learning meet," the university was created to fill a critical need for working adults whose educational aspirations weren't met by existing institutions. It began as an innovative upper-division college, pioneering competence-based learning, recognizing students' prior experiences, and allowing them to design their own degree paths.

From its humble beginnings with just 50 students and classes held in rented spaces, Metropolitan State has evolved into a comprehensive public university. While initially focusing on juniors and seniors, it expanded in 1994 to welcome freshmen and sophomores, integrating general education requirements and traditional grading. This growth, alongside an increase in baccalaureate programs to over 30, solidified its role in offering accessible and relevant higher education.

Today, Metropolitan State University continues its commitment to flexibility and student success. With a main campus in Saint Paul and additional facilities in Midway, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn Park, it serves a diverse student body of 7,861 individuals.
