The Institute's history dates back further than its 1977 founding, evolving from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, which operated from 1873 to 1981. In 1977, a pivotal moment arrived when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized the hospital system to grant academic degrees, leading to the launch of the Massachusetts General Hospital Academic Division. Re-established as MGH Institute of Health Professions in 1980, it began admitting its first students for degrees like the Master of Science in Physical Therapy (graduating its first class in 1983) and the Master of Nursing Science. In 1985, it became a distinct, separate corporation, solidifying its academic autonomy.

Today, the MGH Institute of Health Professions offers an impressive 34 degrees and certificates, covering a comprehensive range of health disciplines. Prospective students benefit from its vibrant location in the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, occupying over 174,000 square feet across six modern buildings.
