MGH Institute of Health Professions stands as a distinguished private university, singularly focused on advancing graduate-level education in the health professions. The Institute's rich history began with the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, which operated from 1873 to 1981. A transformative moment arrived in 1977 when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted the hospital system authority to confer academic degrees, leading to the launch of the Massachusetts General Hospital Academic Division. Renamed MGH Institute of Health Professions in 1980, it began admitting its first students and swiftly established its academic credentials. The inaugural degree, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, saw its first graduates in 1983, closely followed by the admission of its first entry-level Master of Nursing Science students in 1982.

Today, the IHP continues its legacy of innovation and impact. Re-constituted as an independent corporation from Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985, the Institute made a strategic move to the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston in 2001, where it now occupies over 174,000 square feet across six state-of-the-art buildings. Offering 34 diverse degrees and certificates, MGH Institute empowers its students with specialized knowledge and practical skills, preparing them to make significant contributions to the health and well-being of communities worldwide.
