About Mid-Atlantic Christian University
Faith-driven education: Mid-Atlantic Christian University shapes leaders since 1948.
Mid-Atlantic Christian University (MACU) stands as a beacon of faith-driven education, dedicated to equipping students for lives of service and spiritual leadership. With its inspiring motto, "Set for the Defense of the Gospel," this private university, led by President John W. Maurice, fosters a close-knit community where every student can thrive. Its intimate setting, currently serving 172 students, ensures personalized attention and a deeply supportive environment for academic and spiritual growth.
MACU's rich history began in 1948, when visionary founders George and Sarah BonDurant established it as Roanoke Bible College. Their mission was clear: to address a pressing need for trained preachers in Eastern North Carolina and the Tidewater region of Virginia. From its humble beginnings with just 12 full-time students, the institution quickly grew, graduating its first class in 1950 and consistently producing graduates every year since, building a legacy of impact.
Over the decades, MACU has evolved while remaining true to its core mission. It achieved significant milestones, securing accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education in 1979 and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1999, ensuring a high standard of academic excellence. In 2005, MACU further expanded its resources by absorbing Eastern Christian College, enhancing its library holdings and equipment. The university officially embraced its current name, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, in 2009, reflecting its broader regional reach and continued dedication to Christian higher education.
