Millsaps College

The college's rich history began with the vision and generosity of Major Reuben Webster Millsaps, a Confederate veteran who donated both the land and a significant sum of $50,000 for its establishment in 1889–90. William Belton Murrah served as its inaugural president, working alongside Bishop Charles Betts Galloway to secure essential early funding. This enduring legacy is honored on campus, where Major Millsaps and his wife are interred, and the college maintains its proud affiliation with the United Methodist Church.

Millsaps College played a vital role in national service during World War II, participating in the prestigious V-12 Navy College Training Program. From April 1943 to 1945, the campus welcomed 380 students initially, and a total of 873 officer candidates, providing critical engineering, pre-medical, and pre-dental training. This program showcased Millsaps’ capacity for rigorous academics and its commitment to contributing to larger societal needs.
