MATC's deep roots trace back to a groundbreaking 1911 Wisconsin law, designed to encourage young adults working full-time to continue their education part-time. This pioneering spirit led to the opening of the Milwaukee Continuation School in 1912, establishing a legacy of accessible education. Over the decades, the institution transformed, adapting its name from Milwaukee Vocational School to Milwaukee Vocational and Adult School, reflecting its commitment to expanding opportunities for all learners, regardless of age or background.

The college solidified its comprehensive technical focus through significant evolution and mergers. In 1968, it became Milwaukee Technical College after merging with the Milwaukee Institute of Technology, and just a year later, it embraced its current identity as Milwaukee Area Technical College by uniting with other metropolitan vocational schools.
