About Minerva University
Pioneering global education with a venture-backed, seminar-based curriculum for the modern world.
Minerva University, a private institution founded in 2012, is redefining higher education with its innovative approach. Eschewing traditional campuses, Minerva emerged from the Minerva Project, securing a substantial US$25 million in venture funding from Benchmark Capital. This unique foundation allowed it to attract top academic talent and develop a distinctive, seminar-based curriculum designed to foster critical thinking and practical application of knowledge.
The university's history began with the ambitious vision to create an undergraduate program unlike any other. In 2013, Stephen Kosslyn, a distinguished academic from Stanford and Harvard, was brought on as the founding Dean, instrumental in shaping Minerva's rigorous, interdisciplinary educational framework. Later that year, Minerva Project officially partnered with the Keck Graduate Institute, launching the Minerva Schools to offer its groundbreaking degree programs.
Academically, Minerva is known for its five Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programs across Arts and Humanities, Business, Computational Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Its commitment to excellence is reflected in its highly selective admissions; the first class in 2014 saw only 29 students matriculate from 2,464 applications, resulting in a remarkable 2.8% acceptance rate. Expanding its reach, Minerva also introduced a Master of Science in Decision Analysis in 2016 and collaborates with esteemed institutions like the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on its cross-disciplinary Cornerstone Courses, ensuring a globally relevant and challenging academic experience for its students.
