The college's rich heritage commenced in 1923 with the founding of Virginia Junior College. Officially established in 1925, the institution embarked on an evolutionary journey marked by significant transformations. It eventually relocated to its present-day campus on W. Chestnut and N 9th, subsequently undergoing name changes to Mesabi State Junior College and later to Mesabi Range Community and Technical College, each reflecting its expanding educational scope and unwavering commitment to the region it serves.

In January 2014, the college proudly adopted the name Mesabi Range College, further solidifying its distinct identity. A pivotal moment arrived in 2022 when it merged with Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College, Rainy River Community College, and Vermilion Community College to form the unified Minnesota North College.
