Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University (MSU) stands as a prominent public land-grant research institution, classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity." From its roots in agriculture and mechanical arts, MSU has evolved into a comprehensive university celebrated for its pioneering research and dedicated service. It's also renowned for its passionate college baseball culture, particularly the iconic Left Field Lounge at Dudy Noble Field.

Chartered in 1878 as Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College, MSU was founded on the principles of the Morrill Act, offering practical education alongside classical studies. Over the decades, its mission expanded significantly, marked by key legislative acts like the Hatch and Smith-Lever Acts which established its agricultural experiment station and cooperative extension service. The university's growth led to its renaming as Mississippi State College in 1932, and finally Mississippi State University in 1958, reflecting its burgeoning graduate programs and academic development. A pivotal moment in its history was its desegregation in 1965, welcoming Richard E. Holmes as its first African-American student.

Today, MSU offers over 180 baccalaureate, graduate, and professional degree programs across 12 colleges and schools. It proudly hosts Mississippi's only accredited programs in architecture and veterinary medicine, with the College of Veterinary Medicine notable as the largest under one roof in the nation. Beyond academics, the vibrant campus life is fueled by the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA Division I as a founding member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
