About Missouri Baptist University

Missouri Baptist University: A Christ-centered educational journey from St. Louis extension to thriving university.

Missouri Baptist University (MBU) began in 1957 as a humble campus extension of Hannibal–LaGrange College, driven by the need for an evangelical Christian institution in the St. Louis area. Starting with 68 students, it quickly grew, charting its own course as Missouri Baptist College in 1964. Under the guidance of early leaders and St. Louis Baptist church members, MBU laid its foundation as a four-year liberal arts college, graduating its first class in 1973 and evolving into a residential campus by 1980, significantly expanding its reach and student experience.

The university experienced a period of remarkable growth under President R. Alton Lacey, who took the helm in 1995. During his tenure, MBU's enrollment more than doubled, new graduate and post-graduate programs were introduced, and the institution successfully completed its largest development project—a $10 million campaign. This era culminated in the college officially becoming Missouri Baptist University in 2002, reflecting its expanded academic offerings and growing influence.

Today, MBU is known for its strong liberal arts foundation complemented by diverse graduate programs, including Master of Science in Education, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Christian Ministry, and a Doctorate of Education. Students benefit from modern facilities like the 58,000 sq ft Pillsbury Chapel and Dale Williams Fine Arts Center, renovated academic halls, and a vibrant learning commons that replaced the traditional library. MBU fosters a comprehensive student experience, blending academic rigor with a supportive, faith-based community as it continues to grow and adapt, even returning under the jurisdiction of the Missouri Baptist Convention Board of trustees in 2019.
