Monmouth College

Monmouth College stands as a distinguished liberal arts institution, boasting a rich history of innovation and resilience. Founded in 1853, it was a pioneer in co-education, ensuring equal access to courses for both men and women from its very inception. This progressive spirit fostered a unique student experience, notably leading to the establishment of the first women's fraternity, Pi Beta Phi, in 1867, and Kappa Kappa Gamma in 1870, shaping Greek life nationwide.

The college's enduring spirit was profoundly tested and proven through national crises. During the American Civil War, Monmouth famously kept its classes in session despite a significant portion of its male student body enlisting for service, with 232 students, faculty, and trustees serving. Decades later, during World War II, the college adapted dramatically, transforming into a U.S. Naval Flight Preparatory School and later an Academic Refresher Unit, training over 2,000 Navy men and influencing national training curricula. This history underscores a deep commitment to education and national service.

Academically, Monmouth has consistently excelled, particularly gaining national prominence in the 1950s for its chemistry department. Recognized by the American Chemical Society, it was noted in the Steelman Report for producing a remarkably high number of chemistry PhD candidates, rivalling much larger universities. Today, Monmouth continues its strong liberal arts tradition, supported by a growing endowment—reaching $146 million in 2021—and significant campus investments, including over $120 million in new construction and renovations between 2002 and 2013, ensuring a vibrant and supportive environment for future generations of students.
