Monmouth University

Monmouth University began its remarkable journey in 1933 as Monmouth Junior College, a visionary institution conceived by Dean Edward G. Schlaefer. Born out of the challenging era of the Great Depression, its founding purpose was noble and urgent: to provide an essential pathway to higher education for high school graduates in Monmouth County who faced economic barriers to attending distant colleges. This commitment to local, affordable, and impactful education remains a cornerstone of the university's identity, reflecting a deep-seated dedication to its community.

In its early days, the college ingeniously adapted to its circumstances. Without a dedicated campus, classes were held during evening hours at Long Branch High School, showcasing the determination of both faculty and students. Opening its doors on November 21, 1933, Monmouth Junior College quickly attracted 325 students, all from local high schools, supported by a faculty of 12 instructors and financed by crucial federal reemployment funds. This innovative start laid the groundwork for a truly community-driven educational experience.

The institution's rapid growth and deep community roots were pivotal in its evolution. Demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to its mission, it transitioned into a privately funded institution, driven by the unwavering support of its students and the surrounding community. This dedication culminated in 1947 when the school achieved full college accreditation from the New Jersey Board of Education, empowering it to award associate degrees. The following year, 100 students proudly became the first recipients of these degrees, marking a significant milestone in Monmouth University's enduring history of educational excellence and community service.
