Montgomery College

The college's roots trace back to a fascinating predecessor, the Bliss School of Electricity, established in 1893. This private, for-profit institution, renowned for teaching electricity, began with a modest 26 students in a single room in Washington, D.C. Over the years, it saw notable figures like Thomas E. Robertson, a future U.S. Commissioner of Patents, and Charles Francis Jenkins, a pioneer in motion picture and television, walk its halls, underscoring a legacy of practical, impactful education.

In the 21st century, under the leadership of President Jermaine F. Williams, Montgomery College continues to innovate and expand its impact. Former President DeRionne Pollard, who led from 2010, spearheaded significant initiatives like the development of a new mission and strategic plan. A standout achievement is the Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) program, a collaborative effort with Montgomery County Public Schools and the Universities at Shady Grove. This vital support system helps over 1,700 disadvantaged students transition from high school to college completion, exemplifying the college's dedication to student success.

Montgomery College is also a proud member of the Achieving the Dream network, a national reform movement focused on improving student outcomes at community colleges.
