Born from the vision of the North Shore Community Arts Foundation, Montserrat began its journey as the Montserrat School of Visual Arts. Its growth into a fully accredited college in the mid-1980s, authorized to award the prestigious Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, marked a significant milestone, solidifying its commitment to comprehensive artistic education. This evolution laid the groundwork for its current identity, preparing students not just to create, but to thrive in the dynamic world of art and design.

Since 1992, the college has called the historic Hardie Building on Essex Street its home, a beautifully renovated nineteenth-century structure that serves as the heart of its campus. Here, students immerse themselves in a rich curriculum, guided by faculty who embody the principle that creativity is a powerful, employable skill. While the institution briefly explored a merger with Salem State University in 2015, Montserrat has continued to independently champion its unique mission, ensuring a focused and dedicated experience for every student.
